This was a first! I have never had an airport engagement session! I had also never been up in a small plane with a couple before! What an adventure! I can’t imagine anyone else I would rather have had this adventure with either. Jacob and Megan are some of the most fun, joyful, enthusiastic, generous, and thoughtful people I have ever met. When they called about their engagement session and asked, “How do you feel about flying?” I wasn’t sure what to expect. Honestly, I was aftraid they wanted to go skydiving! Considering the fact that Jacob proposed to Megan underwater during one of their scuba diving excursions, I thought ANYTHING might be possible.
Although I was nervous, I just couldn’t pass up this opportunity. Jacob has flown many, many times and Megan is his perfect adventure buddy and sang his praises as a pilot. Jacob even started flying before he had his driver’s license! How could I not trust him? This was not Zack’s cup of tea, so he didn’t volunteer to join us. He really missed out because it was AMAZING! I wasn’t even afraid as we flew over the ocean on our way to Catalina Island. Unfortunately, as we flew over the island, we could see the low-lying clouds creaping up the back of the mountains and beginning to cover the runway at the VERY small airport. We were so disappointed! However, we headed back to Gillespi Field and still had a wonderful time together for their airport engagement session.
I don’t think it would be possible to have a “bad” time with Megan and Jacob. These two are just insanely fun to spend time with! Quick to laugh, constantly snuggling, obnoxiously positive! Basically, WONDERFUL people and perfectly matched with each other! I barely had to help them with poses since they were just so excited to be together and to get photography “training” for their wedding day. We laughed so much and truly had a great time caputuring the beauty of their relationship in images. Their wedding at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse just kept the good times rolling! Check out their wedding blogpost!
These laughs with Megan and Jacob lasted the entire time we were together. They are so fun!
Not going to lie…I had many anxious thoughts before this engagement session about crossing the ocean. Jacob is an excellent pilot, but the thought of plunghing into the water did cross my mind now and again…BEFORE we left. Once we were in the air I was confident in his mad skills!
These two amazing people have been on MANY flights together. I am sure they will be on many more!
The aiport is to the right of this image, right where you see the clouds! It wasn’t safe to land and I appreciate Jacob’s desire to keep us all safe.
Although we couldn’t shoot on Catalina Island like we had hoped, Gillespie Field was a wonderful second choice! Jacob is a part of a flying club here and he rents planes to take up in the air.
This watch belonged to Jacob’s father, who had passed not long before this shoot. It was a wonderful reminder for him of the amazing father he lost.
