I think engagement sessions are my favorite type of portrait shoot, especially when it is an engagement session at Balboa Park. Spending time with couples and learning about who they are and about their relationship is always so encouraging and inspiring! There is just nothing better than talking about love…and an upcoming WEDDING! The excitement of starting a life together is infectious! What a joy to to walk around the park with Ashlee and Isaac and talk about their upcoming wedding at the Hotel del Coronado! Shooting at the Del has always been a dream of mine! I am so grateful to be with these two when that dream comes true!
Every couple we photogaraph and become friends with is so unique and adorable! In the short time that we have known Ashlee and Isaac, it is so apparent that they are made for each other. This was perfectly on display as Isaac, ever the gentleman, gently helped Ashlee slip into her stunning heels at each location in the park. It was so obvious how comfortable they are together and how much they appreciate one another.
When I asked them about their life together, Ashlee confirmed how amazing their relationship is. She mentioned sweet things like the fact that Isaac tears up when she sings Disney songs. He even randomly purchaces flowers for their house! She also said that they, “Love a good outing especially if it inspires a couples outfit likencostumes at comic con/Halloween or Friday night dinner party. And as much as we love staying in and cooking/baking, we love a fun, intimate group Food/wine pairing experience too!” Once again, these two are perfect for one other! Enjoying each others’ sense of humor and how much joy they can find in the small things in life!
I shoot at Balboa Park more than any other location in San Diego. It’s like my second home! There are so many places here to photograph! I’ll walk you through my favorite locations. Please remember that this is one of the most iconic places in San Diego. Since that is the case, it can become extremely crowded on the weekends. Always check their calendar before you plan to schedule a session at this location. I would recommend shooting a session here during the weekdays if possible.
The Alcazar Garden is truly lovely. With a couple of fountains, flower beds and a pergola, it is very romantic. The flower beds are hit and miss, depending on what time of year you decide to visit. Obviously, the Spring is quite beautiful. They frequently change the types of flowers grown in these beds as well. You never know what will be on display!
If privacy is what you are after and you would like the bell tower in the background, the south side of the Timken Museum of Art is perfect! Rarely have I found people in this location. Another location with few people is the courtyard in front of the Old Globe Theater. I like the location just below the Museaum of Us bell tower. Another favorite little spot is the Museum of Art, under the windows, by the railing.
Balboa Park’s Organ Pavillion is beyond gorgeous! There are days when there are performances here, but it is rare. This is the perfect place for a photoshoot! Iconic San Diego at it’s best…and it looks like a palace! Lastly, the east side of the Prado is one of the hidden gems in the park and it has little traffic. The Botanical Gardens are also in the background, which makes it stunning!
