Coronado San Diego Engagement Session | Tommy & Amanda
Feb 5, 2025
Tommy and Amanda were absolutely adorable at their Coronado San Diego Engagement Session! They were so full of giggles and absolutely in love with each other! Zack and I are so excited about their wedding at West Wynd Ranch in September because they are just so much fun to spend time with! They truly love to be together and be play. I think they are our first couple to be Dungeons and Dragons fans and we love that about them! They are so playful and that is going to be such a special part of their wedding and marriage.
It is inspiring to see a couple still thrilled to be together even after they have known each other since they were kids in church. This is probably because they both appreciate that they are both givers and that they consistently share all of their love with each other. This beautiful part of their relationship will make their wedding something truly spectacular. We have met their families and they have the same lovely spirit, so we know this is going to be a celebration to remember!
Why Shoot a Coronado San Diego Engagement Session
Coronado is one of my very favorite places in San Diego to have photography sessions(here is a link to more sessions). There is just something so beautiful about the light here. I think it is because of the reflection of the “clean” sand on to the skin of clients. Also, There are also no cliffs to reflect unwanted colors like orange onto clients’ skin.
I always start my sessions in the sand dunes, making sure to place my clients’ backs to the sun. This is called “backlighting” and it can be quite tricky. When a photographer shoots into the sun, the images can be altered if the sun comes into their lens. This will cause haze, and although some photographers like this look, it is not my style. So, the best way to keep this from happening for me is to, bring my husband. Zack uses a relector to block the sun from hitting my lens and I can then get beautifully glowy images without the haze. I just love that I can get a lovely rim light around my client’s heads. It makes all the difference.
The second half of every session is taken down by the water. As the sun begins to set, the light isn’t as harsh and so images can be taken in more locations. I especially love the ten minutes AFTER the sun actually sets. The sky is full of so many colors and the light on my clients’ faces is perfection. Using a flash during this time can also create an entirely new look. If I use a flash to brighten the front of my clients, I am more likely to catch the true colors of the sunset as well. Lastly, I usually capture a silhouette to end our time together.
